The words “entrepreneur” and “young” aren’t meant to be inextricably linked, but somehow they have become so since the dot.com days and the Web 2.0 wave of startups. In fact, if you think “entrepreneur” and “older” you most likely envision Donald Trump or Sir Richard Branson – established guys who’ve been coming up with creative ways to make billions since they were well, um…young.

Somewhat complicit in the “young entrepreneurs” vision was the Australian entrepreneurial online magazine Australian Anthill, running a regular segment on entrepreneurs under 30 called “30 under 30”. Each time they released a new “30 under 30” list, they heard from readers over 30 who wanted to know why the focus was always on these young folks. Plenty of people over 30 launch businesses, too – often more successfully than their younger counterparts.

Anthill has answered the over-30 crowd with its first “5over50” list of entrepreneurs born before 1960. The twist is that these are not Donald Trumps or Richard Bransons, but rather people who in their late 40s and beyond who gave up steady jobs and launched their own business in the last 5 years.
