It makes perfect sense that John Rocha should be a Sean Scully fan – infact, I can’t believe I never saw it before. Two cases in point:
Obviously there is the colour similarity, but also I see a resemblance to the way Scully juxtaposes the organic, rough-edged lines of his shapes, with their strong geometric composition. Rocha’s designs are very natural and organic in texture, yet can be incredibly sculptural at the same time.
Rocha’s discussion of texture – and how the Irish landscape is one of the strongest purveyors of it – is also thought provoking. I’ll keep an eye out for him next time I’m in Grogan’s: he seems like a guy you could easily share a pint with.
