Meet Joshua Tree’s Crazy Trees

Comments Off on Meet Joshua Tree’s Crazy Trees

Joshua Tree is a stone’s throw (about an hour drive) from Palm Springs California and couldn’t be any more different from its neighbor. (I wrote a piece about Palm Springs earlier this week).

It’s known for its red and arid earth, it’s dry air and of course, the unusual Joshua Trees themselves, which only grow in the desert. The trunk of a Joshua tree is made of thousands of small fibers and lacks annual growth rings, making it difficult to determine the tree’s age.  If it survives the rigors of the desert it can live for hundreds of years with some specimens surviving up to a thousand years.

The tallest trees reach about 15 m tall. New plants can grow from seed, but in some populations, new stems grow from underground rhizomes that spread out around the Joshua tree. Bottom line, they’re mysterious, beautiful and despite the fact that I had been three times before, I found new things to look at in the park. Below is a glimpse of Joshua Tree’s crazy trees.
