Each year the on June 5th, people all over the world celebrate World Environment Day. Created by the United Nations as an annual day of awareness and action, people everywhere get involved in making their communities a bit more environmentally sound. The theme this year is forests and we thought we’d give you a little round up of what’s going on today.
– In Brazil, each time someone downloads this free song, a sapling will be planted in a designated area of the country.
– Over 9 tonnes of rubbish will be picked up in and around Mount Everest by a team of climbers. In addition to the clean up, the local communities around Everest will be installing a waste management system and a recycling facility.
– In places all over Canada, people will be planting trees (this year’s theme is forests) and the Canada’s first female astronaut will be leading a series of talks about the environment.
– Bahrainians are beachcoming their shores for trash, and in Sierra Leone, hundreds of students will be treeplanting on sugar loaf mountain.
Katherine Hui is currently the Social site editor at Green Thing, a web-based public service in London that inspires people to lead greener lives through creative content.
Before this, she worked as the Development Manager at Social Innovation Camp, an organization that encourages people to use web and mobile-based technology to mobilise social change. She oversaw 300 ideas submission and helped build 20 prototypes – five of which have gone on to get further funding or investment.
Katherine’s came over to the UK form Canada in 2007 for an MSc program at the London School of Economics. Before arriving in London, she managed a small environmental start-up in Vancouver called the Canadian Climate Change Alliance.
Katherine is football mad. She is a loyal supporter of Arsenal FC, plays for Islington Borough Ladies FC and coaches for Gunners in Islington in her spare time. Her second favourite hobby is kite surfing and she can sometimes be found chasing the wind.
