Oscar de la Renta’s Resort 2011 collection – with its bold prints, bright colours and beautifully structured shapes – is bound to be a hit. The collection is allegedly inspired by Picasso’s Cubist period, and some of the prints certainly hint towards this influence…
But whilst I can see a resemblance in terms of the shapes, the colours used by de la Renta are far more opulent than the sombre palette of browns and greys favoured by Cubist-era Picasso. Tonally, if not always geometrically, the collection also bears more than a passing resemblance to the cut out works of Matisse.
