The seaside town of Fish Hoek has so many outdoor activities that it’s difficult to choose just one. But for nature-lovers who enjoy a slow amble and lots of fresh air, a walk along Jager’s Walk is a must.
The gentle path follows the rocky coastline from the far end of Fish Hoek beach to Sunny Cove. Here you’ll find sign boards which explain the life cycle and history of the dolphins that frolic in the nearby waters throughout the year. If you’re lucky enough you might even spot a school of the energetic creatures. There are also sign boards dedicated to the Southern Right and Humpback whales that come to False Bay in late winter to calve.
The beloved Jager’s Walk was horribly damaged during a heavy storm in August 2008, to the extent that the popular walkway had to be closed for 15 months. Luckily it was reconstructed and repaired to its former glory and once again walkers, joggers and anglers enjoyed its amenities.
On any sunny day, especially during school holidays and on weekends, people of all ages can be seen picnicking, soaking up the sun or playing in the fascinating rock pools. Parents bring their kids here to do a spot of fishing, young teens enjoy each other’s company as they dip their feet in the cool water and other Fish Hoek residents laze about on the many benches that line the path.
The views of the kid-friendly Fish Hoek beach and the extended False Bay are a sight worth seeing. Because of the winds in the area, the water will be dotted with surfers, hobie cat sailors, surfers and paddlers. There is also an active community of life savers who use this beach as practicing grounds and headquarters.
If you see the trek fisherman out on their boats, make sure you take a walk to the spot on the beach where they haul their catch out of the water. You might pick up a fresh harder or yellowtail fish for dinner.
If you feel hungry after your lazy summer walk, stop in at the Fish Hoek Galley restaurant. A favourite with locals and foreigners, this eatery is literally right on the beach. It offers diners a wide range of cuisine from sardines on toast to full seafood platters. If you only want a small snack, enjoy a soft-serve ice cream under the island style umbrellas just outside.
The playground nearby is the perfect place for the kiddies to release some of their energy while the parents can take a breather.
