I had the pleasure to meet and hang with Reggie Watts recently who flew from Seattle to Maine to perform for the PopTech crowd this past October. Words that sum him up if it were possible to sum someone up, they would be: witty, amusing (no hilarious), brilliant, unpredictable, energetic, outrageous and creative.
Reggie constantly improvises, switching between comedy and music, using his British-accented voice and a looping machine. His bio calls him an avowed “disinformationist,” Reggie loves to disorientate his audiences in the most entertaining way.
As a solo performer, Reggie was handpicked by Conan O’Brien to open nightly on Conan’s entire North American “Prohibted From Being Funny on Television” tour. Reggie was featured as “Hot Comedian” in Rolling Stone’s Hot Issue 2010, named SPIN Magazine’s “Best New Comedian” and “Best of CMJ” 2010, and a featured profile in GQ’s Man Of The Year issue 2010. And why not with that wild hair of his that you just want to reach out and touch for the hell of it.
Down-to-earth and a delight to be with, he has you continuously in stitches on and off the stage. Not unknown to the international scene, in addition to PopTech, he has played sold-out solo runs at Fusebox, SXSW, Bonnaroo, Soho Theatre (London), Brian Eno’s Luminous Festival at the Sydney Opera House, Montreal Comedy Festival, Vancouver Comedy Festival, Bumbershoot, Sydney Festival, Outside Lands Festival and cities throughout the world including Amsterdam, Paris, Cologne, Madrid, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Melbourne, Cape Town and Rekjavik, among others. Whoaah Nellie, this man gets around.
Have a listen for yourself and not only will you be entertained, but you’ll find that your spirit and mental state will be lifted as well.
