Hike: Wildflowers, Aspens and Salmon Entice You On Sagehen Creek Trail

Sagehen Creek Trail is a relatively flat 5+ mile trail that winds along a beautiful creek between Truckee and Sierraville California, not far from Lake Tahoe. Wildflowers, Brown’s Peonies, a grove of Aspen trees and Pines as well as sage bushes, pine cones and squirrels grace this path and large salmon grace its long winding creek.  Near the end of the trail, at Stampede Reservoir, are fields that fill with Camas Lilies in early spring.  Along the trail is the other Lilly – the Death Camas.

Below are some shots I took on a late September day recently. While there was a birder among us and there are plenty of incredible birds in the area, I mainly took photos of trees and vegetation along its picturesque and serene path. Check out Dave’s collection of Birds of Northern California, which includes a few shots he took that day.

Directions: The trail is not signed but relatively easy to find. Traveling north of Truckee California on Route 89, you will note a small turnoff parking area on the right immediately after crossing the second (the first is Prosser) creek about 7.2 miles north of the Route 80 overpass. From there you just follow the trail along the creek for about 2 miles of sensational hiking till you reach the reservoir and the meadows that fill with Camas Lilies.
