Currently, the above statement is affecting 2 million people. At the end of July 3.2 million people will need extension to benefits for source of income. The bill will cost the nation 35 billion dollars and the extension will be implemented until November 2010.
The US Senate went on a forth of July recess without passing an extension; however the US House of Representatives passed the unemployment extension bill preserving the unemployment benefits to 2 million Americans. The Republican Party and a lone Democrat in the US Senate are currently filibustering the current Bill number HR 4213. The Republican Party stated the stimulus would have a negative impact on the national debt crisis. President Obama accuses the Republicans of holding back recovery.
With just one vote short of 60 and after the death of Senator Robert Byrde, the Democratic Party needs Joe Machin to be appointed temporary successor otherwise the bill will not be passed again.
For many Americans, a non passing of this bill could have detrimental consequences. One woman said in the Corona Unemployment Office this was “her sole means of income, without it I am going to end up on the streets” Another man who depends on this income to pay bills said “I had two interviews last week but my phone was shut off and now I can not check to see if I got a job”
During the Bush administration the economic downturn happened in 2008 and continued to decline during the newly elected Obama administration. The Federal government lent $538 billion to bail out banks and auto companies according to http://www.propublica.org. These companies were poorly managed and after receiving tax payers relief they still paid outrages bonuses and benefits to selective upper management.
The tax payers bailed out corrupt companies now it is time for Senate to bail out the people.
