The Death of Rock Criticism: Music is Math

1000Chris Weingarten (@1000TimesYes) is on the 140 Character Conference stage in NYC talking about Twitter and the Death of Rock Criticism: Music is Math. He says, “Good writing died at the birth of search engine optimization. We have moved to a stumble culture – websites are just repeating the same names over and over again. It’s about how many times you can mention a keyword.”

Articles are playing mad lib with Google trends – they’re all writing about American Idol right now because it’s what gets Google hits. We’re creating a culture where musicians have to become marketers — they’re now having to focus more of their time on guerilla warfare on the web than their art.

Art is suffering because no one has money to make a good video. A musician has to be a meme, a keyboard whore, an Internet hustler……they can’t just be an artist.

Chris encourages the audience with these leave behinds: “fuck the numbers, fuck math, listen to a radio station that doesn’t have your genre, create a Pandora list from an artist where you like just one song, and download an album you’ve never of because you like the art of the cover. Don’t let your math make your music choices for you and don’t believe the hype machine.”
