The Circque du Soleil is currently touring with their Saltimbanco tour, and it is set to hit Cape Town’s shores early next year. While it is still a long ways away, tickets are already on sale now!
The Circque du Soleil (in English the Circus of the Sun) is a Canadian entertainment company touring the world with their eclectic and dramatic mix of street entertainment and circus arts. Founded in 1984 by two former street entertainers, the Circque du Soleil is based in Montreal, Canada.
The founding members Guy Laliberte and Daniel Gautier first name the act Les Échassiers and after touring Quebec in 1980 they struggled with financial hardship which threatened to end the short-lived entertaining act. Luckily for Laliberte and Gautier, and the rest of the world, a government grant was received by the group in 1983 as part of the 450th anniversary celebrations of the discovery of Cananda by Jacques Cartiers.
The success of the Cirque du Soleil ever since has been documented worldwide with its character-driven approach to performance and the absence of live and wild animals as part of the show has defined the group as the contemporary circus that is it today.
Each show has a central storyline that is brought across to the audience through a synthesis of circus styles from around the globe. The performers themselves change the props around rather than prop-hands, and this coupled with the continuous live music tends to draw the audience into the mystical world onstage.
They are currently touring and performing in over 271 cities on every continent except Africa and Antarctica. They will be in South Africa between March and April 2011, and will perform in Cape Town and Johannesburg. The much awaited arrival of the extravagant and magical show on our South African soil means that if you’re planning on seeing the famous Cirque du Soleil then you had better book your tickets soon!
