Cape Town’s South Side Markets

Comments Off on Cape Town’s South Side Markets

There is a trend in Cape Town which has seen the proliferation of many a day-markets popping up in the city. These are the kinds of Saturday or Sunday markets that will have you browsing the stalls laden with homemade jams, trendy dresses and patisserie sweets for hours on end. And the southern peninsula hasn’t been left out.

Over the recent months (and for some markets the years) there have been a number of awesome trendy and family markets to spring up in the area.

The Muizenberg Market can be found everyday at the Sunrise Circle, Sunrise Beach. On Saturdays there is an influx of day visitors to the area so it can get really busy but you can still manage to browse the stalls. You can find anything here from clothes, fresh fish and toys to great tasting food, sunglasses and all kinds of electronics. The stalls are operational between 8am and 4pm which gives you ample time to stroll through the entire area. Make sure you take a hat and sun cream as there is very little shade.

The Triangle Market, which used to take place in Fish Hoek from 9am to 2pm every Saturday, has now moved to Longbeach Mall. Here you’ll find anything to tempt the taste buds from freshly made (and still warm from the oven) bread to locally grown vegetables and fruit. It’s a great way to support local gardeners, farmers and bakers of fresh produce. There are some unique treats to be had too such as gourmet biscotti and creamy cheeses. You can call Brian on 082 990 5292 for more information about the market or check out the website: www.trianglesquare.co.za.

In the Republic of Hout Bay every Sunday there is the craft market. The location on its own is enough to warrant a visit; set on a lush green-grass field with leafy trees providing shade for families and their dogs. You’ll find any kind of African curio on these stalls from wire angels to decorative ostrich eggs. Your little ones will even get to go on a pony ride. And in the unlikely event that you don’t find something to nibble on from one of the stalls you can pop into the Italian ice-cream shop and get a dollop of the creamy good stuff for measure.
