Fall colors tours can be easy ways to (re)discover local and new landscapes.
One U.S. destination we love is West Virginia whose landscape bursts into vibrant fall hues of orange, red, gold and green.
From late September to early November, the Mountain State offers these brilliant autumn colors in its 36 state parks, 7 state forests and 200,000+ acres of foliage.
Almost 80 percent of West Virgina is covered in trees which makes it the third most-forested U.S. state.
There are scenic rail tours of West Virginia including Travel on the New Tygart Flyer; The Cheat Mountain Salamander; The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad; New River Train Excursions; Cass Scenic Railroad and The Durbin Rocket Excursion Train.
Says West Virginia Tourism:
“For a closer look at the autumn tapestries of color, hike through the Monongahela National Forest containing over 910,155 acres of mountains, streams and raging waterfalls. View the fiery red covered heath barrens of Bear Rocks and Dolly Sods at the highest plateau east of the Mississippi River…”
If you’re driving, there are several highlighted fall colors driving tours: Scarlet Heartland, Mountain Magic, River Reflections, Southern Accents and Golden Getaway.
American travel specialist America As You Like It also features autumn colors fly-drive packages to West Virginia.
