If you’ve never been skydiving or frankly, are a little nervous about doing so, indoor skydiving might just be for you. In Las Vegas, VEGAS Indoor Skydiving has been around since 1982 and was formerly known as Flyaway. At Vegas Indoor Skydiving, you will earn their wings and experience bodyflight during a simulated skydive experience in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip. The experience is similar to skydiving with the addition of a mesh trampoline floor and foam padded walls. The idea is to simulate the freefall aspect of skydiving without the use of an airplane or parachute.
Below is a shot of me during my second or third try, which gets a little easier as you begin to get a feel for what to do and not do. In other words, the more times you try it, the better your balance becomes.
At the beginning, they take you through a brief training class of our process and then they will get you suited up in all the necessary flight gear before they bring you into the bubble room. (my word for it, not theirs). They use a Vertical Wind Tunnel to introduce people to the sport of Indoor Skydiving. The tunnel produces enough wind to support the weight of an average adult.
Once you’re in the tunnel, you first start by lying on the ground while you feel the strong wind below you. After you get the hang of it, however, you simply jump into the wind and start to fly. The entire experience will take about an hour or so.
Height and weight restrictions are important for safety apparently. Guests who exceed the maximum weight are not guaranteed to generate enough lift to actually fly. Being outside the weight guidelines is not a safety issue as much as quality of flight.
It was pure fun and worth giving it a try next time you’re in Las Vegas. In other words, get off the strip and away from the casinos and food/wine scene for a couple of hours, and get the thrill of skydiving in an easy and fun way.
