Documentary BUCK Plays SXSW: An All American Story

BUCK previewed at SXSW this week, which was a touching and visually stunning film. The story follows Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his unusual approach to horse-training.

A great description from the Houston Press: “Buck is a former trick roper, a family man, a partial inspiration for The Horse Whisperer, a master-class horseman, and a victim of horrific child abuse. In the fantastic documentary Buck, director Cindy Meehl illustrates these things are not coincidental; they are, in fact, the causes and effects that have made Buck who he is.”

Eschewing the violence of his past, he teaches people to communicate with horses through instinct, not punishment. He possesses near magical abilities as he dramatically transforms horses – and people – with his understanding, compassion and respect. In the film, the animal-human relationship becomes a perfect metaphor for meeting the challenges of daily life.

It’s an all American story in so many ways: the unsung hero; an ordinary man who has made an extraordinary life despite tremendous odds.   The film was also the winner of the Audience Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.
