I had heard the name “Kjartan” and “Saegreifinn” within ten hours of landing in Reykjavik Iceland. Only later did I learn that Saegreifinn means Seabaron, that it’s a harbor eatery on the sea and that the very eclectic Kjartan Halldorsson is the owner. Below, a painting of him jumps from the wall as you enter the incredibly small eatery on Reykjavik’s harbor.
Here he is today, always ready to pose for photos and greet customers to come to dine at this very casual establishment right on Reykjavik’s harbor.
The below shot was taken one night quite late, although they were still open. Remember that the sun never seem to set in Iceland, at least it didn’t in late June. Seabaron is on the right.
Inside, diners enjoy the casual environment on the harbor.
Inside is no less charming:
Here’s how it works. You simply choose what you want on a kabob (all displayed in a fridge to the left as you enter) and they’ll cook it up for you. Whale is a popular item throughout Iceland but a particularly yummy option at Seabaron.
Then, there’s Redfish
Salmon
And of course halibut:
To give you an idea, 1,800 is about $15 at the time of writing this.
All of it aside….the nautical-ness and the fact that it sits by the sea on Reykjavik’s harbor, the most charming part of the place is Kjartan’s soulful and quiet energy — he most definitely makes the place. He’s a man who knows how to create an experience.
