Got Red Hair? Come to Dublin’s Zoo & Raise Awareness for Orang Utans

This is hilarious and perhaps only in Ireland? DUBLIN ZOO has launched a campaign offering free entry to red-haired or -wigged children during its “Orang Utan Awareness Weekend”.

This weekend only, the Zoo is offering free entry to all red haired children and any child who arrives at the Zoo dressed as an orang utan to drive awareness surrounding the endangered orang utans in the wild.

The primate keeper at Dublin Zoo, Ciarán McMahon, told the Irish Times the scheme was intended as a fun way to raise awareness about the endangered animals which “may be extinct in 10 years”.

Twitter users apparently responded to the project mostly with anger and disbelief, although some welcomed it.

One commenter had this to say about the anger and disbelief:
What a brilliant campaign! Well done Dublin Zoo. Like the orangutang the red head is supposed to be an endangered species. As usual idiots are getting caught up in pettiness and missing the big picture. Don’t understand why there would be red faces. There is nothing negative suggested by the campaign, as a mother of a redhead, I see it as an opportunity to be proud. A couple of the more positive tweets below:
