The combination of rainbows and trash usually takes the form of oil slicks on puddles but Melbourne artist Liz Jones has decided to turn trash into art using the symbol of the covenant of better things to come; that is, the hope that there are better things to come, since it takes her precious little time strolling to collect her materials.
Most of her materials are gathered from beaches and creeks, and she has been using them to create art and jewelry since 2005, putting trash back into circulation to keep it out of the landfills. Her idea for “Rubbish Rainbows” came from a particularly colorful (and large) bag of trash she gathered from a 2009 vacation to Victorian beach. Says Liz: “My first thought was to bin it all, but then the pretty colours were itchin for a quick sorting…and then I wanted to document it.”
