Bay Area Musicals!, the newest non-profit theatrical organization to join the San Francisco Bay Area arts community, closes out its second season with the musical, Seussical. The show plays from July 8-August 5, 2017 at San Francisco’s Alcazar Theatre on Geary Street, a 511-seat theatre that is host to many touring productions of Broadway and Off Broadway plays, as well as variety, cabaret, comedians, and other theatrical events.

This fabulous tale centers around the fun loving characters from the world of Dr. Seuss. For example, who doesn’t remember The Cat in the Hat, which tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.”
The story is the essence of Seussical, which also includes snippets of Grinch as well.
I learn that Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty’s adaptation of Seuss’ work first appeared on Broadway in 2000. This production is directed by Rachel Robinson and Matthew McCoy is behind the choreography.
Daniel Barrington Rubio plays Horton and Kennedy Williams plays Jojo, Seussical and other actors include Andrea Dennison-Laufer, Ariela Morgenstern*, Vinh Nguyen, Katrina McGraw, Zac Schuman, Krista Joy Serpa, Jesse Cortez, and Jenny Angell.

We had the opportunity to go to Opening Night, which included a reception with the actors and team after the performance. The lighting was incredible as was the passion and follow through of the cast — each and everyone created a l’il magic.
Bay Area Musicals’ mission is to produce professional musical theater at accessible ticket rates and to engage the community through performance, outreach, and educational opportunities.
Also, as noted, this production was at the historical Alcazar which has a lovely balcony and pillars. Inside is also lovely with interesting pieces of art scattered throughout.
Single tickets for regular performances range in price from $35–$65. All proceeds from the opening night fundraiser ticket sales will benefit future Bay Area Musical! projects and productions.
For tickets, head over to BAMSF and San Francisco Theater for more details on the show and tickets.
