All you enthusiastic Beatles fans out there will know that this past weekend would have been the great legend John Lennon’s 70th birthday (Sunday 10 October 2010). To celebrate the talented musician’s special day, fans around the world paid tribute to Lennon with fans in New York visiting a circular mosaic decorated with flowers in Central Park’s Strawberry Fields. They sang the poignant lyrics from “Imagine” to honour his 70th.

The so-called “Smart Beatle”, Lennon is said to have brought a wit and intelligence to The Beatles’ music and their self-presentation. In songs like “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” Lennon helped create exquisite melodies where he brought to life a ‘dreamlike world weariness’ that was well beyond his years. His best-known song has become a world-anthem with lyrics like “You may say that I’m a dreamer / But I’m not the only one / I hope someday you’ll join us / And the world will be as one” acting as evidence of his Utopian and reflective way of seeing the world as well as his desire for everyone to dissolve their differences and live in peace and unity.
