I recently discovered LOLO in San Francisco’s Mission because we had to duck into a place to get out of the rain. Originally slated to meet at a cafe now closed, we were on a hunt to find something equivalent with wifi and really great coffee. Instead, we ended up at LOLO, which does not have wifi or really good coffee, but it does have funky ambiance especially at the bar, which is covered in newspaper print behind glass.
At first, I was originally annoyed by the red dogs (aka tacky) behind the counter yet later, I realized that they were a big integral part of the quirkiness of the place, where not a whole lot goes together.
From the bright multi-colored lamps that hang from the ceiling to the tables, red dogs and the newspaper, it’s a mishmash of things, all of which result in a bohemian kind of feel to the place, but without the clutter, without the dimly red light and without the soft charm and flowers.
Lolo was designed by Lorena Zertuche, using many recycled materials. Her idea was to take everyday objects and give them a new life, which is how they approach their food and wine as well. Culinary traditions of Mexico and Turkey have been merged into one in this eclectic bistro that is divided between an area of tables next to the funky bar (with the red shiny dogs) and a separate room/area that has tables and chairs only.
The outside is painted black and its hard to find a sign unless you were specifically looking for it. Below are some ‘food’ shots I took of seafood appetizers on my iPhone while sipping a nice dark and smooth Malbec.
