Fleet Week Aims to Strengthen Ties Between Military & San Fran Citizens

Fleet Week is an annual event held in part to strengthen ties between the military and the citizens of the San Francisco Bay Area. During the week, service members take part in multiple events, from ship tours to static displays, demonstrating the unique capabilities of the Navy-Marine Corps team.

The Angels are the opening act of a five-day event ending Monday, October 10, 2011, highlighted by a parade of ships Saturday and air shows featuring the Blue Angels and the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds flying team today and tomorrow.

Fleet Week typically attracts crowds of up to a million people, but it also often brings a deluge of complaints from citizens over the noise from the Navy jets and the possible danger of a crash during the Blue Angels’ high-speed maneuvers. The concerns are particularly acute this year because of a plane crash at the Reno Air Show last month, when a World War II fighter plane slammed into a grandstand full of spectators, killing 11 people. However, there is considerable difference between an antique P-51 Mustang propeller plane like the one that crashed in Reno and the sleek F/A-18 Hornet jets flown by the Blue Angels.

This is the 30th anniversary of Fleet Week in the city, and may be the biggest yet, Myatt said. Thirteen ships, led by the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson and including two U.S. Coast Guard cutters and four Canadian navy ships, will be in the floating parade under the Golden Gate Bridge and along the San Francisco waterfront on Saturday. About 9,000 U.S. Navy sailors, Marines and Coast Guard will be on board.
