One of my favorite places in Monterey, CA, which is along the coast a couple of hours south of San Francisco and a few hours north of Los Angeles, is a place called Liberty Fish Company aka Liberty Fish Co.
This tiny eatery on the Monterey Wharf has a 3 outside tables where if the weather is on your side, you can sit and bask in the sun while gobbling down some of the largest oysters you’ve ever sampled. (yes Kiwis and Nova Scotia-ites, these monsters even top the ones I’ve had on your soil).
I don’t get down there very often anymore, but in the days when TED was at the Monterey Convention Center, I had an annual excuse at the very least to stop in and place a massive order of a dozen or more. Usually more. :-) It’s hard to resist because not only are the oysters scrumptious but the staff is there to please. I’m always amazed at how friendly the service is and even a step beyond, “what else can we do to make the experience even better for you?” I love these guys. Many a’ restaurant could learn from the way they operate and how they treat customers in a Zappos-like way.
Their medium sized oysters are only a buck or $1.50 depending on size, but look at what you get for $2.00. These are quite honestly some of the largest oysters I’ve ever sampled and folks, I’ve been to more than 70+ countries. And what’s great is that they’re tasty too, not bland and tasteless like the larger ones tend to be.
This guy was hilarious. He dug out the biggest he had for me when I ordered yet another 2 after I could barely push another one down my throat. Yup, I’ll take it I said gleefully and out he came with another monster, perfectly mixed cocktail sauce which I rarely use, and plenty of lemon and oyster crackers. New England without the New England weather.
So if you head down to Monterey at some point in your life, stop and say hey. And be sure to tell them Renee at We Blog the World loves them.
