Twitter could be a valuable source of public health information for doctors and other medical professionals, according to a study. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University analyzed more than 2 billion tweets and used processing software to spot and categorize about 1.5 million health-related tweets. That data allowed the researchers to track the way an influenza outbreak had spread across the country, and even to determine that many people were self-prescribing useless drugs rather than visiting their doctor.
