The South African music scene is as varied as her rainbow-nation inhabitants. Kwaito music from the Apartheid townships continue to pop beats into your knees, Boeremusiek echoes the Afrikaans identity interwoven in South Africa’s history while the Rock ‘n Roll, Folk and a medley of other popular genres create part of her contemporary soul.

The ethnic diversity that has become the vital ingredient in South Africa’s eclectic and culturally rich existence has meant that the musical tastes of everyone are heard loud and clear.

From the more traditional Kwaito, Boeremusiek, Folk, Gospel, A cappello, Soul, Jazz and Rock ‘n Roll to the more modern and younger-based Drum and Bass, Psychedelic Trance, Metal and Punk there is a platform within South Africa’s borders for all types of music.

Bands and artists such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Karen Zoid, The Springbok Nude Girls, Vusi Mahlasela, Prime Circle, Freshlyground, The Parlotones, The Rudimentals and many more have made their mark on the South African music industry and their fans’ hearts and there are so many exciting new up-and-coming acts to look out for like The Dirty Skirts, aKing and The Plastics.
