We decided to go out for dinner in the southern peninsula area, but were stumped as to a nice “date” restaurant to go to. My mother suggested Sirocco in Kalk Bay so we decided to chance it and just rock up. Only problem is it closes at 4pm. We found that out the hard way and decided to scour the Kalk Bay main road for an appropriate replacement.
We first popped into 19-on-Main Bistro. It’s a quaint little place, and you can only enter it after walking down a narrow alley-way. We stepped inside and the atmosphere was relaxed and homey. Unfortunately they only offer a curry buffet on Sundays, and while it looked and smelled delicious, we were in the mood for something else.
We then considered Cape to Cuba and Tribeca Bakery but our sights fell on Satori, a warmly-lit pizza and pasta restaurant. We waited a few minutes before being led to an intimate table in the far corner of the room.
Our French waitress was a little slow, which wasn’t comforting, but we were happy to sit in our own company. The décor of Satori is reminiscent of what I can imagine to be a small-town Italian eatery with olive oil bottles and giant tins of pizza sauce adorning the window sills and the shelves. The coupled red and yellow roses on each table added a romantic touch while the soft lighting had a soothing effect.
The menu is simultaneously limited and expansive. Here you’ll only get salads, pizza and pasta, but if you’re looking for one of those your choices are almost endless. We decided to try out the large Four Seasons pizza to share; one quarter ham and mushroom, one quarter avo, feta and bacon, one quarter ham and pineapple and one quarter savoury mince, green peppers, onion and chilli.
When it arrived the pizza looked impressive and it tasted even better. The mince on the mexicano portion was lean and tasty, the pineapple was juicy and the cheese was delicious. The only problem we had with the meal was that the avo wasn’t ripe, and the feta was just slightly too salty.
My boyfriend ordered a single espresso and, if you like your coffee, order a double. Satori has a laid-back feeling to it, you won’t find anything faced-paced here, but the great-tasting food is a definite winner. If I’m looking to eat some genuine wood-fired pizza again I’ll head straight to Satori.
Call Satori on 021 788 1123 to make your booking.
