Last night (8 November) after work, all of us in the house decided we felt like takeaways, and after deciding upon a quaint Chinese restaurant in our area, then realising it’s closed on Mondays, we decided at the last minute to head on down to the Brass Bell for their Monday Night Quiz Evening.
It was our first time attending the evening and we were looking forward to it. The Quiz Evenings have been going on for 20 years and entry is R20 per person. The money all goes into a pot and the first, second and third place teams all get a portion of it.
The teams are all regulars (I think we were the only team that had not been before) and have their usual team names, and while the level of knowledge is quite impressive the entire event was done in a relaxed and amiable manner.
We were asked questions like “In which state and year did Buddy Holly’s plane crash?” and “For what offence did Paris Hilton get 45 days in Jail?”, and while we started off with a bang (we got our first 5 questions right) we sadly came in last place. But the whole evening was in the name of fun and after ten rounds of five questions each we had definitely learnt a thing or two.
What’s really wonderful about the organised Quiz Nights is that they provide snacks for each team that participates. We weren’t too sure whether the snacks would fill us up enough so our team (all three of us) shared a large portion of some of the juiciest ribs I’ve tasted in a long time. Then when it came to half-time (when the snacks are served) we were so full we couldn’t finish our platter! They had made crispy calamari, juicy chicken strips, potato wedges, a fresh salad and seasoned breads – a feast fit for a Quiz Master.
After the ten rounds were up and the totals were tallied we left with a bottle of wine (even though we did come dead last) and full bellies, eager to try better our score on next Monday Night’s Quiz Evening. At only R20 a person, everyone should get a team together and try their knowledge out against the perplexing yet interesting questions.
