Holiday destinations in South Africa are endless. You can spend weeks relaxing on idyllic beaches, soak up the sun and drink cocktails or take an authentic African safari and immerse yourself in the wild bush. One of the most beautiful regions of South Africa is KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Here you’ll be surrounded by rolling hills and stunning shorelines; a perfect setting for your holiday.
KZN is home to the Zulu African Tribe; its name literally translates into ‘of the Zulus’. They have lived in the region for centuries, and their culture is evident throughout the region. The area is most famous for being the hometown of one of the early Zulu kings, uShaka Zulu. His story plays a major role in the history of KZN and you’ll find mention of his name in many places throughout South Africa. Make sure you visit the memorial Couper Street Monument, Stanger in the KZN Province.
You can partake in a rural village tour where you are welcomed by the residents. The locals will enjoy it if you get involved, chat to them and learn about their way of life; enjoy a pint of traditional beer and stop off at a traditional sangoma, an African witchdoctor, for a different perspective on healers.
There are daytime township tours available, and these tours generate a considerable amount of money for the local communities. The tours are focused on cultural experiences and learning the way of life of the Zulus. The Inanda township, just outside the city of Durban, is a popular destination for township tours.
For some game viewing, the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve will not disappoint. It is the only reserve in KZN that hosts all Big Five members and provides visitors with excellent safari opportunities. As well as spotting the Big Five you’ll get to see giraffe, blue wildebeest and, if you’re lucky, the rare wild dog. The warm climate of the area ensures you’ll enjoy a sunny safari experience.
If you want to take some time out and laze around on the beach, Umhlanga and Umhloti are two of the best KZN has to offer. Both are popular among holidaymakers and are situated about half an hour outside of Durban city. You can explore rock pools, soak up the sunrays or enjoy the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Just remember the currents here are strong, so don’t wander too far away from the designated swimming areas monitored by lifeguards.
No matter what activities you plan on enjoying on your South African trip, KwaZulu-Natal has got it all.
