It always feels good to give back to the community, especially when you know you’re helping out a child in need. That is exactly the kind of opportunity that the Empowerment Through Education Fund (E-T-E) is awarding local residents with its aim of education for all.
The fund was set up to sponsor the complete education from Grade 1 through to tertiary education, five children each year from both Masakhane Creche in Masiphumelele and Green Curtains Pre-Primary School in Ocean View. Both schools are situated in Cape Town’s southern peninsula.
Five children are chosen each year from the schools that exhibit the most talent, determination and potential, and are selected by their respective teachers and the E-T-E Board with the consent, approval and support of all parents.
The fund pays for and monitors the education of the child, with a small contribution from the parents and schools; this ensures the full commitment of all parties involved. The E-T-E Fund was happy to announce at the beginning of this year that six children had successfully competed their first year at Sun Valley Primary and one at Paul Greyling, and enjoyed a well-deserved break during the festive holiday. The children all received positive reports from their teachers, doing their parents and donors proud.
2011 sees six E-T-E-funded students registered at Sun Valley Primary, each one having been fitted with new uniforms and school supplies. The fund is so proud to be responsible for 13 students receiving top-class schooling, and thanks friends, supporters and donors alike. It costs R15 000 to sponsor one child for a year, and the children of Masiphumelele and Ocean View are fortunate enough to have this stepping-stone given to them by people who care.
This organisation is truly an inspiration and gives people a wonderful opportunity to help out the poorer part of our community. The E-T-E Fund believes that the key to empowerment is education and are confident that the bursary programme will provide the children with a good grounding to break the cycle of poverty.
