Durban is widely thought of as a sleepy seaside town with not much happening and no where to go. That couldn’t be a more wrong assumption; Durbs is an energetic city with cultural, lifestyle and fun events happening all the time.

We take a look at some of the events to attend over the next few weeks in KwaZulu Natal’s favourite city and surrounds:

Art:

The KZNSA Gallery opens its doors today to reveal the members exhibition for 2011. the theme is The Bold and the Beautiful, and artists were called on to submit a piece of work that they believe reflected that philosophy. The exhibition opens tonight at 6pm and will run until February 19, 2011. To find out more information call the gallery on 031 277 1705.

The ArtSPACE Durban presents Petros Ghebrehiwot and Julie Mayo two artist who come from different backgrounds and working in different mediums. Ghebrehiwot has a fascination with society and positive values while Mayo’s interest lies in construction. The exhibitions opened yesterday, 24 January, and will run until 12 February 2011. Music:

If you feel like a bit of entertainment tonight head on down to The Red Door, Pietermaritzburg. Former Tree63 front man, John Ellis will be supported by Aymira which consists of Daniel Rossouw and Kyle Baker. Tickets cost R30 and doors open at 8pm.

Comedy:

At the Heritage Theatre viewers of the Mel miller’s Big Fat Comedy Show are sure to get in a few laughs. Miller has had comedy in his family for years and he will be performing his one-man show for only five days. The show opens tonight 25 January and will run until 30 January. Tickets are between R165 and R190, which includes a two-course meal. Call the theatre on 031 765 4197 for more information.

Theatre:

If you want to catch the performance on ‘Spice and Stuff’ you better get your tickets fast. The show only runs until 30 January at the Catalina Theatre, and promises to be colourful and cultural. A spice trader, Rita, grapples to keep her business alive while trying to avoid a secret from her past. Call the theatre to find out more about this drama-comedy on 031 305 6889.
