The other day on the way home we decided to stop off in Kalk Bay for a mouthful or more of the Ice Café’s smooth and creamy ice-cream. If you’ve never been to this boutique ice-cream store before then best you head out to the southern side this weekend and get your taste-buds around one of the marvellous flavours on offer.
The store itself is quaint with pretty tiles on the floor and an open feeling; the glass windows allow ice-cream-lovers to sit and watch the indigo world of Kalk Bay go by. On any given day there are about 20 flavours to choose from and boy do they all always sounds delicious. I’m a firm fan of the Belgium Chocolate, but had previously decided that I wanted to try something new so I picked the Fudge and Flake flavour in a sugar cone. My companions each chose their preferences and then we sat there, very happy with ourselves.
This little store, with its flavoursome offerings is actually world-famous. Jamie Oliver has even been in to taste what they have to offer. There is a wonderful photo of him enjoying his “Peaches and Cream” cone as he sat outside on the bench. And he’s not the only celebrity to pass through the shop’s doors; Waddy Jones of Die Antwoord popped in a few years back. The server on-duty at the time suggested he try the cherry-yoghurt which he did. He also ended up writing about it on of his songs.
It’s not surprising that so many people take time out to visit the Ice Café; with flavours like “Cocoanut”, “Romany Cream” and “Ginger” calling out your name who wouldn’t want to test out the creamy delights?
The portions are very generous so you can easily get a one-scoop sugar cone and feel totally satisfied after your creamy feast. They do offer a one scoop sugar cone that consists of two flavours for those who simply cannot choose just one flavour. I usually have the rich Belgium Chocolate with whatever else is on offer that takes my fancy, and what’s really great is you’re allowed to have teasing tastes of the flavours that you’ve never tried before you choose.
So go on people, summer is definitely here, treat yourself to a scoop or two of some fine ice-cream.
