My aunt is visiting from Ireland and to take advantage of the wonderful weather we’ve been enjoying in Cape Town these past few weeks we decided to go out for a light lunch in the southern peninsula
Our first stop was at Imhoff’s Gift where we browsed through the curio shops and stopped off at the farm style shop to pick up some organic treats. We then headed to Noordhoek Farm Village and headed straight to Café Roux to find a table.
We were immediately met by Deo, our waiter for the afternoon, whose comfortable and easy way had us feeling relaxed and sitting at a table inside in no time.
We perused the menus and marvelled at all the scrumptious-sounding meals on offer. The restaurant has soup and pasta specials available every day, and their vegetarian options are innovative enough to make any meat-eater want to try them.
I asked for an apple juice and was surprised at how wholesome and fresh it tasted.
We put in our orders and the lovely Deo took care of our two bottles of wine (corkage is R25 per bottle), bringing us glasses and an ice-bucket swiftly. We were also presented with fresh, homemade corn bread to nibble on while we waited for our lunch to arrive. We didn’t have to wait long though; we ordered two burgers, a warm beef sandwich and a Mediterranean-style vegetarian sandwich and they were delivered to our table in what seemed like a matter of moments.
The portions are large and presented beautifully; we could tell that all ingredients used were fresh just by the aromas tantalising our sense of smell. We happily dived in and apart from appraisal the table went quiet.
Once we all had our fill we chatted about what a lovely restaurant Café Roux is. The neo-Colonial, farm-style setting soothes and settles visitors while the rustic finishing gives the place character. There are natural elements running throughout; the wooden table and chairs, bamboo-style ceiling and rough picture frames create a sense of authenticity.
We enjoyed the soothing background music and the contented chatter of other happy patrons as these only add to the tranquillity of the experience. Café Roux is a child-friendly restaurant and doesn’t allow smoking. They are only open at night on Thursdays when they invite guests to enjoy their Braai Night.
With such a relaxed pace as the norm you can enjoy your meal at your own leisure. We paid our bill and said goodbye to Deo who had been a most helpful, friendly waiter and left, fully intending to return again soon.
