Often, the way we drive is a symptom of the way we live; Too fast. When we go too fast, in life and in our cars, we not only miss the opportunity to enjoy life to the full but it’s downright dangerous too. Slowing down is the single most effective and immediate way to improve road safety. If we all slowed down our chances of crashing, being killed or seriously injured on the road, would dramatically decrease. It’s that simple.
When we slow down in life, it allows us to relax. We actually achieve and experience more when we take the time to live in the moment, without rushing to the next….Slowing down gives us the opportunity to be more considered, deliberate, and thoughtful. It allows us to concentrate on the important things. When you’re driving, nothing is more important than the task at hand.
The Government of Western Australia has an initiative called Enjoy the Ride, which I learned about through my friend Carl Honore, the SLOW expert. While driving is a big part of it, and slowing down at the wheel can help save lives, its a metaphor for how we do everything in our lives. As part of the initiative, other core topics they’re focusing on includes: eating, health, business, planning & environment, on the road and lifestyle.
In other words folks, slow your driving down and slow your life down. When we truly focus on the things that matter, we’ll have all the focus we need. And, more importantly, the attention to priorities in our lives, allowing us to put the small stuff that we sweat every day on a long leash behind us.
