The Long (Beach) Walk in South Africa

Comments Off on The Long (Beach) Walk in South Africa

The other day my parents and I decided to go for a walk along the beach and couldn’t decide which stretch of sand to go to. We finally settled on Kommetjie beach and set off in that direction.

The day was simply perfect and the afternoon stroll alongside the water made me realise how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful city.

The beach can be accessed from a number of roads, but there is a small and busy parking lot at the far end towards Cape Point. We found a free parking spot and were surprised to see how busy it was.

Surfers and beach-lovers were climbing into or out of their cars either leaving after a quick swim or arriving for an hour-long surf session. The energy was great; everyone was enjoying the summer weather and wasn’t about to waste any second of it.

We headed down to the sand and saw sprawled out before us parents and children, dog-owners and their beloved companions and body boarders all playing in the sand, running around or about to hit the waves. We strolled through watching the Labradors and pavement specials frolicking in the waves and kids shrieking as the water touched their toes at the shoreline.

As we headed further up the beach it became quieter and we could take in the crashing sound of the ocean hitting the earth. We were left in peace and continued towards Noordhoek beach. When we reached the long stretch of sand we stopped for a dip in the sea; it was freezing cold Atlantic water but refreshed us after the hot sun.

We walked all the way to the Kakapo shipwreck and stopped at the rusty pieces jutting out of the rusty sand to take some pictures. The vessel was wrecked in1900 and the skeletal remains are a popular landmark for the beach. Shortly after the disaster the Slangkop Lighthouse was erected to prevent any more ships falling victim to the shore.

After we had taken our photos we turned back towards Kommetjie beach and walked back to the car. For anyone looking for a sublime walk on the beach this is the perfect route, parts of it are busy and vibey while some parts offer the strollers a peaceful retreat from the noisy world we live in. if you do decide to head out to Kommetjie for a walk to the skeleton ship make sure you take some water, a hat and sun cream with you. And bring along a friend.
