Avid music lovers in South Africa will probably agree that the local radio stations don’t play enough good alternative rock music.
There is one movement however that is dedicated to bringing South African citizens a great selection of rock music. Rock Out Radio (ROR) calls itself South Africa’s “most dedicated rock radio station” and has some exciting news for the New Year.
The radio station is South Africa’s first national online station dedicated solely to playing rock music, and even gets broadcast from every launch party. It has a strong following on the popular online social network site Facebook, and also supports other groups that promote South African rock music such as voiceofrock.com, South African Bands Appreciation Group and SA Alternative Music Hub.
The ROR fan page was founded in 2009 and is a platform for music lovers, band members and journalists to chat online about local rock music. There is a long list of locals bands from Gauteng, Cape Town, Durban and the Free State who have pledged their support to the alternative radio station. It is a good platform for bands to get their music out there because ROR accepts all rock bands for play listing.
The genres covered by the online radio station include alternative, experimental, folk, punk and stoner rock amongst many others.
Now ROR is seeing in the New Year with some interesting developments. The ROR representative, Kosta Papageorgiou recently sent out a message to all ROR’s followers stating that “the rumour is quite true… rock is about to come alive… be free and be what you want it to be.”
In an effort to off-set the frustration of commercial radio stations constantly blasting what Kosta terms as “garbage” (we’ve all thought it at some point while listening to 5fm’s morning show) at its listeners, ROR is developing its webpage and will work in conjunction with OBtek Streaming to ensure the sounds of South African rock is heard. The idea is that listeners will be able to listen to South African and international rock bands on the station anytime of the day.
