Cinco De Mayo is a Mexican celebration commemorating La Guerra de Puebla in 1862. Some people mistake this day for the Mexican Independence day, which is actually celebrated on September 16th. Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday in Mexico but in the US, it’s another reason for big celebrations. This year, Cinco de Mayo falls on a Monday so we’ll be celebrating all weekend (including Monday) and I’ve got your whole weekend planned for you. That only means you’ll need to pick up your hangover helpers before work on Tuesday morning!
Gran Electrica
Located on Front Street in Brooklyn, Gran Electrica is a market-driven Mexican restaurant. All foods are prepared with fresh, seasonal ingredients from local farmers and purveyors such as Flying Fox Fruiter in Brooklyn. Gran Electrica will be opening their 50-seat garden this Saturday, which made the top 10 best restaurants for outdoor dining in NYC, and they will be hosting a live DJ all weekend to start your fiesta off the right way.
Tequila Park
Tequila Park at the Hudson Hotel has been closed for the winter season and will open its doors on May 4th, just in time for Cinco de Mayo. The party starts on Sunday at 1pm for the second annual Taco Knockout when chefs from La Cenita Steak, Los Perros Locos, and Best Pizza will be competing to create the ultimate taco. On Monday, the party continues at 6pm with live mariachi. The bar will be stocked with over 40 different tequilas and of course, TACOS! Be sure to RSVP to save your spot at TequilaParkNY@MHGC.com.
Amigos
At Amigos in the Morningside Heights, it’s always happy hour: $5 margaritas all day, everyday. What better way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo than with cheap drinks and good food? Amigos has a super chilled atmosphere and the menu is packed with re-vamped Mexican classics. I also enjoyed the Dia De Los Muertos themed artwork. This Monday, take advantage of the Taco Madness on Mondays with unlimited Tacos and Sangria! I think this is exactly where I’ll be spending my Cinco de Mayo, how about you?

Jessica Tiare Bowen lives in the juicy Big Apple with her adorable pink-nosed chihuahua, Gillman. He’s the inspiration for her first published children’s book, “Park Avenue Pound Puppy.” The book is the combined result of her two greatest passions: pooches and penning stories.
Her passions include art, urban hikes through Manhattan, drinking coffee with 3 creams and 6 sugars, making extremely detailed itineraries and traveling to far away places, singing along to Broadway shows, Netflix movie nights, discovering incredible treasures at Goodwill and thrift stores, and listening to stories from little people under 7 and big people over 70.
She started her career as New York City Teaching Fellow, teaching elementary school and theater arts at a special education school in the South Bronx for 6 years. She is now a Special Education School Improvement Specialist working in public schools throughout New York City. She is the Editor-In-Chief of the online New York City travel magazine, Used York City. The magazine focuses on finding the best of New York…as used by New Yorkers. She is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and an ASPCA Ambassador.
