Thankfully the Blues never dies. If in northern california, check out the 17th annual Santa Cruz Blues Festival this weekend – May 23-24, 2009.
B.B. King and Joe Cocker headline an all-star lineup in a beautiful natural Redwood amphitheater by the beach. The supporting lineups are also top notch with Saturday’s features including four musicians in their early thirties who have played with or been inspired by B.B. King and have the promise to fill the shoes of the older legends.
Jackie Greene, who recorded his first album in a garage outside Monterey at the age of 17, has been touring internationally in singer/songwriter concerts solo, in electric concerts with his band, and as a guest singer with reunited members of the Grateful Dead. He’s the joker in the deck who can do it all, and he’s been nicknamed “The Prince of Americana” by the New York Times.
Sunday’s lineup shows the range of the Blues, with musicians from Mississippi, Oklahoma and Chicago.
Los Angeles native Keb’ Mo’ is also on the list as is New Orleans horn player Trombone Shorty, who blends blues, jazz, rock, and Dixie into a decidedly modern sound. Shorty apparently toured with Lenny Kravitz, performed with U2 and Green Day.
General Admission tickets cost $60/one day and $100/both days.
