Johnnie Fox’s in Dublin’s northern mountains is a special place whether or not it’s Halloween. Below is a snapshot of locals celebrating on Halloween night this year, with the Scallywag band playing (they sadly don’t have a website – although apparently one is on the way from a conversation I had with singer Paddy Brown at the end of the evening). I LOVE the name Scallywag (my grandmother used to call me that)….such a perfect name for an Irish band, one that loves to sing, dance and have a grand ole time.
Situated in Glencullen on top of the Dublin mountains, Johnnie Fox’s is one of Ireland’s oldest and most famous traditional Irish pubs – and they are also famed as the highest pub in the country. Approximately 25-35 minutes drive from Dublin City centre, they tour traditional Irish music every night of the week.
In the early 1950s, programs of Irish music and storytelling were recorded for radio on Sunday nights in Johnnie Fox’s and broadcast to the nation. In the 1960s, Johnnie Fox’s Pub was famous for the session – Ah Seisiun – traveling musicians would gather to play and trade songs with local people – a tradition which prevails today.
