Mullumbimby Music Festival Down Under Kicks Off

Four days, 8 Venues and over 100 performances will be taking place in Australia starting tomorrow, November 22, 2012 at the annual Mullumbimby Music Festival.

The event started in 2008 when the Mullumbimby Civic Hall was refurbished and renovated, enabling the building to once again be host for any kind of community event, and theatrical or musical performance.

It also meant that along Dalley Street there was now 4 possible venues. (The Ex-services Club, The Drill Hall and The Bowling Club) with the addition of The Poinciana Café and Lu Lu’s Cafe – Mullum was ready for a music festival.

A l’il history. The 2008 festival opening night very nearly didn’t happen. A wild electrical storm nearly halted the proceedings.

Two of the three entries into Mullumbimby were cut off and the only street that still had power was Dalley Street.  In 2009, an additional 2 venues – The Mullumbimby High School Hall and The Courthouse Hotel were included. This time the Magic Bus made it easier to travel around the festival. In 2010, they initiated the Youth Mentorship program and the Tree Planting, and the newly renovated Byron Region Community College on Gordon Street hosted workshops and films.

2011 hosted the inaugural Mullum Music Festival Street Parade – featuring stellar artists from the 2011 line up, including Harry James Angus (The Cat Empire), Jeff Raglus (Victoriana Gaye), Hamish Stuart (Lucie Thorne & Hamish Stuart), Mullum’s Magic School Kids, Mullum Uke, and a whole swag of local musicians, street performers and punters.

This year’s event will be held November 22-25, 2012.
