Editors of the tabloid press can see a small lizard, scientists can see evidence of running water. I think I prefer a human race where the latter gets more media coverage.
The Independent says that a Japanese alien-enthusiast spotted something between the endless plain of rocks spread out on the screen in front of him yet Mars is on the toxic side to most fauna. According to a UK Times article from 2011, dark gullies on the surface of Mars has provided the strongest evidence yet that there could be liquid water flowing on the planet, according to scientists. Also from the same source: ice has already been found beneath the Martian poles and gaping canyons and river-like channels have led scientists to believe that liquid water once flowed in plentiful supply on Mars.
The truth is that we still don’t really know, but what an astonishingly stunning sight. A reminder not to give up on space exploration.
