I have gone white river rafting a few times over the years, mostly in New England in the U.S. and in Switzerland and Austria in Europe and once in New Zealand, but lordy, its been awhile and I had forgotten how great the rush is.
This week, I tried a variation of white river rafting in Montreal, something they refer to as Jet Boating. In Montreal, there are a few companies that will take you out, but the one I tried out was a company called Saute Moutons. (and yes, it appears that their mascot is a lamb or sheep or some sort :-)
Much larger than a typical raft they use on river rafting trips, the Jet Boat goes through an area called the Lachine Rapids on Canada’s St. Lawrence River. It lasts roughly an hour and the boat goes through the white vibrant and wild Lachine Rapids which has Montreal as a view off in the distance.
The tour guides call the area “our” playground and it really becomes one for the 2 or 3 boats which circle around a massive deep rock in the middle of the rapids, stirring up the river’s waves for the boats to crash into on every turn.
It’s not a boat tour where you get a tad wet, so you really need to strip down to nothing including your jewelry and just trust the process. The waves crash on top of you as the boat makes its way deep into the thundering waves.
It’s worth doing but if you’re one to get cold, stick to June, July or August only as Canada’s St. Lawrence River isn’t bath water warm. The price to play is $65 for adults, $55 for children.
