Have you ever traveled somewhere and thought, “I can’t believe this is actually the name of a city!”
Geographer and Nokia’s Director of Places Gary Dale has. In fact, he’s created an interactive map highlighting the world’s most suggestive city names. Some of the highlights:
- Poo, India
- Poo, Spain
- Bitche, France
- Arsoli, Italy
- Nob Hill, San Francisco, United States
- Climax, Georgia, United States
- Intercourse, Pennsylvania, United States
- Tittybong, Australia
- Pee, Liberia
- Vagina, Russia
- Anus, Philippines
- Gland, Switzerland
- Six Mile Bottom, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom
- Bum, Southern, Sierra Leone
- Spread Eagle, Newfoundland, Canada
“Maybe it’s part of being British, but an airport whose code is BUM is just … funny,” Dale told the Daily Mail. ‘The source of each of these vaguely rude sounding names was from Yahoo’s WOE data set, before the data was released via the GeoPlanet API and (currently offline) GeoPlanet Data download. A list of real but amusing sounding place names, culled from GeoPlanet by one of the old Yahoo! Geo team, has been sitting in a file on one of my backup drives for too many years now.”
