I’m finally getting through Arianna Huffington’s Becoming Fearless. It is targeted to women yet much of what she talks about could be applied to men who have held themselves back in life or sabotaged their success at the point when they were about to fly.
It covers fearlessness in all aspects of our lives: body image, love, motherhood, work, money, spirituality, illness and aging. A whole section is dedicated to fear of faith which I found interesting.
She makes reference to fear-filled religiosity and fear-filled alientation from all things spiritual and then brings in a number of references to back it up, including Jean-Paul Sartre’s quote which celebrating this ’emptiness.’ "Life has no meaning….it is up to you to give it a meaning and value is nothing but the meaning that you choose."
And then brings in Freud’s famous book about religion: The Future of an Illusion. While simple and predictable at times, she weaves in enough emotion through her own life stories and examples to give this book the sauce it needs to beg you to read on.
