In the U.S., a new microbrewery opens every week. So it’s no surprise to find that microbrewing is just as much of a passion — if not more so, considering their rich history in brewing — among the French Canadians of Montréal.
Being in Montréal, I had to try at least one of their more notable microbreweries. And it was my pleasure to visit Benelux Brasserie Artisanale et Café, where I was overwhelmed by their selection, service, and subtleties of flavor.
Benelux, located on the corner of Sherbrooke and Jeanne-Mance, is a true microbrewery, serving up a selection of their own beers that they brew on site. The beers definitely have a French-influenced taste, with a healthy selection of saison brews and an emphasis on subtle flavorings over hoppy boldness.
The general manager treated me to a wonderful sampling of the brews they had on the menu that day, including one spectacular brown ale that was not on the board. All were wonderful, ranging in tastes from a rich-tasting pilsner to a slightly hoppy IPA to a
wonderfully malty ale. Which highlights another great point about the establishment. Unlike many microbreweries that settle on a select few brews to offer up, Benelux seems to be constantly experimenting and serving up new concoctions to their devoted fans. So there’s no point in listing specific beers, since every time you go the selection will be different.
As for food, I was at first skeptical. When I asked for the best thing on the menu, I was told, “Definitely the spicy hot dog.”
The hot dog? Really?
But being one never to doubt a recommendation from a general manager, I ordered one — and was blown away. This French-style sausage was on a freshly baked baguette and covered with Dijon and sauerkraut. To say this is among the best hot dogs I have ever eaten was an understatement. It’s a definite must if you stop in.
On the potential downside, the atmosphere is a bit mixed. Like most beer bars near universities, this one can be over-run by young, loud 20-somethings. Beer at affordable prices always attracts a crowd that isn’t there to appreciate the hints of chocolate or macadamia nuts in their brews. But having said that, the decor is tastefully modern and comfortable. And the staff was knowledgeable and friendly, willing to talk about their beer offerings with eager excitement.
Whether you are a beer lover or just want a great casual place to grab a quick bite and enjoy a fantastic brew, definitely make Benelux a stop on your next tour of Montreal.
