Espresso.kom: A Hidden Delight

For those of you who hang out in Kommetjie often you’ll know that this seaside town is a favourite for surfers, modern-day hippies and fishermen. There are a number of restaurants and cafés to choose from such as the British Bulldog or Fisherman’s, but if you’re feeling peckish and are in the area you might want to try out the unassuming café Esspresso.kom.

In the main road is a store that sells groceries to the locals, and up the next road is our destination; Espresso.kom Fully Licensed Restaurant and Coffee Shop is tucked between a book store and a shop that sells deli goods. There are tables and chairs nestled beneath the great big trees which provide a romantically natural setting and plenty of shade.

We took our seats and ordered our drinks; a hot chocolate and an iced-coffee. As we waited we enjoyed the calmness around us; the village post office and vet are nearby as well as a pizza house. It was busy, for Kommetjie, which meant that there were just a few other people hanging around. The peace and quiet is wonderful as it gives you a chance to listen to the lapping waves against the not-too-distant beach.

Our drinks arrived, both rich and creamy in their own right, and we placed our food orders. I asked for a beef burger with bacon while my lunch partner opted for an open ciabatta with bacon and avo. We didn’t have to wait long before our meals arrived and we eagerly tucked in.

The portions are more than generous and the quality of the food is really good. My beef burger tasted wholesome and juicy; I could tell it was a homemade patty. The bacon and avo sandwich was also delicious with every ingredient scrumptiously fresh. We were surprised at how good the food was because we had been to Espresso.kom once before and hadn’t remembered the meals tasting so good.

As we ate a couple more tables were filled, and as the various patrons received their coffees, toasted sandwiches and cokes I truly got the feeling that I lived in a beautiful, stress-free part of the country. The relaxed attitude of Kommetjie is concentrated in this small coffee shop and everyone open to a laid-back lifestyle is welcome to it.

The restaurant is hosting an intimate Valentine’s Day dinner tonight with a special three-course meal lines up including starter of prawn spring roll, a melon, prosciutto and basil salad or a baked ricotta. For mains they’ve got lamb kebabs, farfalle pasta with salmon or spinach, mushroom and Chevre phyllo parcels on the menu and the desert is a berry, cream and dark chocolate basket or litchis, lime ice-cream and triple sec.
