On Saturday November 14, 2009 at 7:30 pm, Philip Gelb, West Oakland’s master of aural-gustatory synesthesia, presents an eclectic evening of music and food.
New York violinist and composer Cornelius Dufallo performs from his recently released album, Dream Streets. Time Out New York describes Dream Streets as “a beautiful, evocative disc of electroacoustic soundscapes… all [of which] serve as apt reminders of this vital artist’s considerable gifts.” Dufallo is currently director of the new music ensemble Ne(x)tworks and has been a violinist in ETHEL since 2005.
Also on the program is local saxophonist and composer Hafez Modirzadeh , whose fresh, original approach to cross-cultural collaboration has earned him multiple NEA Jazz Fellowships as well as an Artist-in Residence Grant from the California Arts Council.
Modirzadeh’s playing is deeply rooted in the legacy of African-American musical traditions, yet is also compelled by his Persian heritage. In addition to their solo work, Dufallo and Modirzadeh collaborate in a new project that crosses the boundaries of genre and culture.
