Myrtle Beach, South Carolina makes for a great family getaway especially with direct flights from New York City. There’s also plenty to do with a family in tow. Here’s a few of our favorite things to do during a long weekend or getaway to Myrtle Beach:
Myrtle Beach State Park
A perfect day to spend outdoors, you can rent a cabana and BBQ til’ your heart’s content! Unlike some of the public beaches in the area, the MB State Park is quiet and serene and not quite as crowded, and you’ll be right at home if taking in wildlife and collecting seashells during a long, beachy walk are on your agenda.
Broadway At The Beach
This lovely area of Myrtle Beach is an enclave of shopping, eating, and entertainment that is well worth a visit! Take a stroll through the area, checking out local attractions, including zip-lining, mini-golf, aquariums, alligator petting farms, legends in concert (think Elvis and The Beatles reenactments!), and plenty of popular bands performing all your favorite songs.
Myrtle Beach SkyWheel
Much like the London Eye or NYC’s The Empire State Building, the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel provides a glimpse of something very special: a bird’s eye view of the entire city and beach. Going at sunset is my recommendation—makes for wonderful Instagram shots with your girlfriends or a romantic date night with your boo.
New South Brewing
If you’re a craft beer connoisseur, you must swing by the factory for a tour and tastings—especially because it’s free! The tour guides are entertaining and clearly passionate about the art of drinking beer, and that enthusiasm radiates throughout the tour.
Carolina Roadhouse
There’s certainly no shortage of restaurants to experience in Myrtle Beach—in fact, there’s over 1,000 in the area! However, for a true southern experience that can’t quite be replicated up north, we suggest Carolina Roadhouse. Expect big portions—and even bigger flavors—as you take down a rack of ribs, foot-long kosher dogs covered with homemade chili, cheese, and onions, or the lighter fare—fresh seafood. Truly a southern foodie experience!
Jessica Tiare Bowen lives in the juicy Big Apple with her adorable pink-nosed chihuahua, Gillman. He’s the inspiration for her first published children’s book, “Park Avenue Pound Puppy.” The book is the combined result of her two greatest passions: pooches and penning stories.
Her passions include art, urban hikes through Manhattan, drinking coffee with 3 creams and 6 sugars, making extremely detailed itineraries and traveling to far away places, singing along to Broadway shows, Netflix movie nights, discovering incredible treasures at Goodwill and thrift stores, and listening to stories from little people under 7 and big people over 70.
She started her career as New York City Teaching Fellow, teaching elementary school and theater arts at a special education school in the South Bronx for 6 years. She is now a Special Education School Improvement Specialist working in public schools throughout New York City. She is the Editor-In-Chief of the online New York City travel magazine, Used York City. The magazine focuses on finding the best of New York…as used by New Yorkers. She is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and an ASPCA Ambassador.
