Many would be surprised that a country with roughly 33 million people would be so large (compare that to the United States at nearly 310 million people). Canada is actually the second largest country in world behind Russia in terms of total area. How does such a small population get around this massive country? Simple, transportation in Canada is built with public transit in mind. To put it in simple terms Canada is built like America with European infrastructure. Here are the best ways to get around Canada:

Air flights Canada
While Air Canada is the biggest and most popular airline (generally the most expensive), they also have other options such as Porter Airlines and Westjet airlines. Porter Airlines is dwarfed in size by both Air Canada and Westjet but have advantages in cheaper fares and flights out of Toronto’s regional airport (hate travelling over half an hour to get the airport?). Best options are Porter and Westjet. If you are looking to get to Canada from outside the country AirTransat provides a lot of international destinations.

Train Travel Canada
A second option next to air travel that is both cost effective and fast is rail. Railway in Canada is spread throughout the vast country and you can get to any major city. If you are going to do extensive travel within Canada, Via Rail offers a “Canada Rail Pass”. This Canadian rail pass is great since it allows you to buy a certain number of trips in bulk and use them within a certain time frame (click here for more info). While Via Rail is the most popular, Ontario Northland serves the North and Rocky Mountaineer provides extensive service in the West around the Canadian Rockies. Train travel Canada is one of the best options if you want to see many gorgeous landscapes.

Canadian bus travel is by far the cheapest of all options but takes the most time. Since Canada is so large you have the option of taking an overnight Canadian coach (this can also be done with train travel in Canada). A Canadian bus is also very convenient since many of the coach terminals in Canada are at or near the center of the city. Megabus is the best when it comes to travel with a Canadian bus. They often have the cheapest fare, newer buses, and wi-fi on every bus. Other options are Greyhound and CoachCanada.
Inner City Travel
I wasn’t kidding when I said Canada has European Infrastructure. They have subways, buses, and The Rocket (streetcars). Another great option is walking! I wandered the city for 3 days straight and loved it.
