Recognize the name Ferdinand Magellan? If you know anything about history, you know that he was an explorer who was known for the expedition that resulted in the first circumnavigation of the Earth completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano. Go back in time to the 1500’s if you will.
While his expedition took him across the Atlantic from Portugal and eventually into Asia as well (he apparently died in the Philippines), the ship made its way to various ports in South America including Brazil and Chile. I saw a replica of Magellan’s ship in Punta Arenas Chile, along the coast this past fall. The Nao Victoria Replica sits outside facing the ocean and is part of the Nao Victoria Museum.
Magellan’s expedition of 1519–1522 became the first expedition to sail from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific Ocean (then named “peaceful sea” by Magellan; the passage being made via the Strait of Magellan), and the first to cross the Pacific.
The Nao Victoria (above) is a replica of Magellan’s was built using real blueprints. Because of that, you can get a complete idea of what it was like to sail around the world. The boat is set up to depict what it was like at the time – no heating, water, beds, kitchen, dramomine, doctor, toilet or cooked meals. Take yourself back 500 years in time and imagine what it was like for the men who sailed with Magellan around the world.
Ferdinand Magellan’s goal was to circumnavigate the planet with 5 ships however only one made it back home. Visiting this replica is like stepping back in time.
