Fort Bragg-based Silver’s-at-the-Wharf Restaurant is located in the heart of the scenic Fishing Village, Noyo Harbor, and is one of the oldest family-fun eating and lodging establishments on the Northern Coast of California. The Restaurant began in the late 1950’s as a small coffee shop overlooking both the harbor at the mouth of Noyo River and the breakwater leading to the open sea. The breathtaking view has been a destination for many over the years now and a regular for both locals and those passing by to take in the magical Redwoods and coastline nearby. Co-owner and Executive Chef, Silver Canul creates modern and creative seafood cuisine with a twist.
I met Silver and his family while we were dining, as we were lucky enough to be there during his day off. Alas, we heard his story. I learned about Juan Pablo, his brother who is the sous chef, his other brother Javier and Jim, the business & operations head. With sixteen years experience each, Silver Canul and brother Juan, have created an extensive menu offering oysters on the half shell, prize winning crab cakes, calamari, cioppino, salmon, halibut, lobster tails, steaks, lamb shanks and games hens. Lighter Fare choices, such as fish tacos, burgers, crab melts, quesadillas and chimichangas are also options.
Dedicated to using only fresh ingredients and individual preparation of menu items, Silver and Juan Pablo add their Mayan touch and knowledge of French reduction methods to create wonderfully tasting sauces. Above is their to die for crab cakes on the menu. In addition to their scrumptious crab cakes, they tout a variety of fresh fish dishes including salmon, Albacore, Cod, Sea Urchin, Red Snapper and Crab. Sport fishing charter boats, whale watching excursions, private boats, Coast Guard vessels, kayaks, seals, and sea birds of all kinds will pass by as you enjoy your lunch or dinner.
They also serve a delicious mussels dish as well as a smattering of pasta dishes, such as roasted garlic and mushroom linguini, linguini primavera, grilled eggplant and portabello mushrooms and scampi prawns.
I’d strongly recommend sticking to the fish dishes since you’re right on the wharf and everything is fresh, but if you must go “meat”, then they have a black angus rib eye, filet mignon, lamb shank, prime rib and a cornish game hen on the menu. We opted for the pan seared rock cod and the salmon (above) as well as the mussels.
They have a variety of specials on weekends over the summer as well, such as fresh lingcod, summer squash, grilled whole sweet white corn with lime, cayenne, salt and butter, grilled artichoke and barbecue oysters. You can also get a half dozen oysters for $14 and a dozen for only $26. Other recommends include the Fresh Alaskan Halibut with tomatoes, zucchini, sweet peppers and Basmati rice and the Fresh Rock Cod Paupiette served with local mushrooms, dungeness crabmeat, bay shrimp and special spices. Also over the summer on Friday and Saturdays, they tout live music.
Lastly, don’t forget dessert. At least order one to share!
The restaurant offers inside and outside seating on a wide open deck in Noyo Harbour. I loved Silver and his team’s energy and hospitality and it’s also a fun place to sit on the deck, order margaritas or a nice glass of white wine to pair up with all that fabulous fish they have on the menu.
